The Shipping Season Playbook: How to Turn Q4 Hiring Into Shipped Product
Q4 is a shipping season, not a hiring season. Filled positions don't move the roadmap — shipped product does. Download our whitepaper to learn how engineering leaders can turn late-year hiring into working software before the calendar runs out.

The Shipping Season Playbook
Every year, engineering teams enter Q4 with open roadmap commitments, budgets that need to be used and less calendar than they think.
The instinctive response is to add people. But a position filled in October is not capacity delivered in December. Recruitment, onboarding, access and ramp-up quietly consume the weeks you were counting on.
This playbook shows how to calculate your real shipping window, build the four assets that turn staffing into delivery (capability, context, access and continuity) and choose the scaling model that matches your actual bottleneck.
It closes with a practical checklist to test every new role against a single question: will this capacity ship before year-end?
What You'll Find Inside
The Maths of Ramp-Up
Why a 13-week quarter can shrink to just four weeks of productive capacity, and how to work backwards from your deadline to calculate the shipping window you actually have.
The Four Delivery Assets
Staffed is not the same as shipped. Capability gets someone into the team, context makes them useful, access lets them act and continuity makes their value compound.
The Q4 Shipping Checklist
A practical, six-part checklist covering scope, capability, model choice (IT Staffing vs Dedicated Teams), context, access and continuity, so every role connects to an outcome.

Why Companies Choose KWAN
As a KWANer alumni, choosing KWAN - the best Portuguese company I ever worked for - as our outsourcing partner was an obvious choice: KWAN and Team Resilience’s values and culture are very much aligned.
KWAN’s proactive initiative was a massive benefit. We needed to drastically increase our development staff and KWAN was able to provide the solution by creating a highly skilled team of developers, who fit the cultural and technical requirements.
In an industry such as the tech one, where computers play a major role, it’s refreshing to account on a partner that is human, open, sensitive, and understandable, such as KWAN.
Is this whitepaper for you?
This whitepaper is for CTOs, VPs of Engineering and technology leaders who need to increase delivery capacity before year-end without creating more management overhead than output.
You won't find recruitment tips inside. You'll find a delivery playbook: how to calculate ramp-up honestly, when to choose IT Staffing versus a Dedicated Team, and how to govern the people who join so their capacity actually reaches production this quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Because organisations confuse staffing capacity with delivery capacity. Between opening a role and reliable delivery sit several stages: search and assessment, notice periods, onboarding, systems access and product ramp-up. In an illustrative 13-week quarter, those stages can consume nine weeks, leaving only four weeks of high-productivity time. The closer you get to December, the more expensive every delayed decision becomes.
Staffed means a person has been allocated to a team. Shipped means their capacity contributed to an outcome that reached users or production. Between those two states sit four delivery assets: capability (the right skills), context (product and technical knowledge), access (permissions and environments) and continuity (staying long enough for value to compound). A team can be fully staffed and still not ship if the other three assets are missing.
It depends on your bottleneck. IT Staffing works best when your delivery system already works and needs more horsepower: an established team, clear ownership, missing specialist capacity. A Dedicated Team fits when the constraint is bigger than one role, and you need an entire execution lane — a new stream, product area or multidisciplinary squad. Choose the responsibility model first, and only then the geography (nearshore, remote or hybrid).
Recruitment solves entry; delivery depends on what happens afterwards. KWAN's People Experience Partner (PEP) model adds a continuity layer around every consultant, built on four stages: alignment of expectations, a regular pulse on engagement, a feedback loop between consultant and client, and early intervention before problems become resignations. In Q4, losing a critical engineer in November means losing all four delivery assets at once, so retention is treated as a delivery concern.
