Best nearshore staff augmentation companies for UK tech teams in 2027
Compare nearshore staff augmentation companies serving UK tech teams in 2027, from Portugal to Poland, with time-zone overlap and engagement models for each.
The best nearshore staff augmentation companies for UK tech teams in 2027 place engineers in a country covered by the UK's adequacy regulations under UK GDPR, and keep working hours close to London. They can also explain their IR35 position in writing. This guide compares KWAN (Portugal), Authentic Digital (a UK company delivering from Poland), Britenet (Poland), N-iX (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine), Roweb (Romania) and Software Mind (Europe and the Americas) for UK tech teams, from startups to established engineering organisations.
Most rankings of staff augmentation companies are written for any buyer, anywhere. A UK company, whether a startup or an established tech business, has narrower questions to answer before it signs, starting with whether HMRC's off-payroll rules reach an engineer in Lisbon or Warsaw. We're KWAN, so we've put ourselves first. The other providers follow in alphabetical order, described from their own public pages as of October 2026.

In short: UK GDPR treats access to your personal data by an engineer abroad as a restricted transfer, and the UK's adequacy regulations already cover every EEA country, including Portugal and Poland. HMRC's guidance says a worker who isn't UK-resident and works outside the UK is unlikely to be chargeable to UK tax or National Insurance, and that the off-payroll rules (IR35) don't apply without that charge. Mainland Portugal keeps London time all year.
What should a UK tech team check before choosing a nearshore partner?
Start with where the engineers will physically work. That one fact sets the time difference with London, the UK GDPR route for any personal data they can see and most of the IR35 analysis.

Adequacy status comes from the ICO's list of UK adequacy regulations, checked in October 2026. Ukraine, Brazil, Vietnam and Tunisia, all named as delivery locations by providers in this guide, are not on that list.
Next, decide the unit you're buying. Some teams need one engineer who joins their sprints and reports to their own tech lead: that's IT staffing and team augmentation. Others need a stable squad built around a product, which is a dedicated team. Several providers here offer both, so ask which one your contract describes.
If speed matters, ask every provider for three dates, each labelled: time to profiles, time to a signed offer and the engineer's first working day. Our guide to the best IT staff augmentation companies in Europe explains why those dates get mixed up in proposals.
Which nearshore staff augmentation companies serve UK tech teams?
The shortlist below mixes single-country specialists with providers that run several delivery hubs. For multi-hub providers, the hub matters more than the brand, because it decides your time difference and your data transfer route.
How we chose these providers. Each provider had to describe staff augmentation, team extension or dedicated teams on its own website, which rules out generalist recruiters and freelance marketplaces. We focused on delivery from EU countries close to London time, and included providers with several hubs, because location changes both the time difference and the data transfer route. Every entry draws only on the provider's own public pages, opened in October 2026. No provider paid to be included or saw its entry before publication.

KWAN (Portugal)
- Engineers work from: Portugal
- Hours ahead of London: 0, all year
- Models: IT Staffing and Team Augmentation; Dedicated Teams
- UK GDPR transfer route: UK adequacy regulations (EEA country)
KWAN is a Lisbon-based IT staffing company founded in 2007. It works in two ways: IT Staffing and Team Augmentation, where individual engineers join your team and work inside your sprints, and Dedicated Teams, a stable squad built around your product. Delivery can be nearshore, remote or hybrid and on-site.
KWAN presents vetted profiles in under five days, and its full recruitment process closes in around three weeks. The first working day is a separate date: an engineer available now can start almost immediately, while one currently employed serves their notice period first.
Every engagement includes a dedicated People Experience Partner who supports the consultant's development and continuity. KWAN reports a ~70% talent continuity rate (excluding internalisations), a figure that leaves out consultants hired directly by clients at the end of an engagement. It holds ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701, with a scope covering contracts, talent management, and IT outsourcing of consultants, teams and data based in Portugal.
Best for: UK tech teams of any size that want engineers on London time inside their own team, individually or as a squad, delivered fast.
Authentic Digital (Poland, UK contract)
- Engineers work from: Kraków, Poland
- Hours ahead of London: +1, all year
- Models: Staff augmentation; dedicated development team
- UK GDPR transfer route: UK adequacy regulations (EEA country)
Authentic Digital is a company registered in England that delivers from a centre in Kraków. Clients contract with its UK company and receive one monthly invoice in sterling, while the engineers work from Poland. It offers staff augmentation, where engineers join your stand-ups and sprints under your own leads, and a dedicated development team that you direct or that it manages.
It publishes indicative 2025/26 day rates in sterling, starting at £330 a day for a mid-tier developer, fully loaded, and says first CVs arrive in four to five days.
Best for: UK buyers whose procurement prefers a UK contract and sterling billing, with engineers one hour ahead.
Worth asking: which roles the published rates cover at your seniority, and how the replacement guarantee is written into the agreement.
Britenet (Poland)
- Engineers work from: Poland
- Hours ahead of London: +1, all year
- Model: Team leasing
- UK GDPR transfer route: UK adequacy regulations (EEA country)
Britenet offers what it calls team leasing, aimed at companies that need proven engineers without building a large internal IT team. Britenet says projects are handled by IT experts it employs, without reliance on subcontractors, and that mid-level developers are backed by a senior specialist. It also describes an HR Business Partner role that looks after the relationship between client and engineer during delivery.
Engineers work from Poland, one hour ahead of London, in a country covered by UK adequacy regulations.
Best for: UK teams comfortable with a one-hour offset that want specialists from a single country.
Worth asking: which Polish city your engineers would work from, and how the HR Business Partner's role fits alongside your own engineering manager.
N-iX (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine)
- Engineers work from: Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and other locations, including Latin America
- Hours ahead of London: +1 to +2 in its European centres
- Models: Staff augmentation; managed team; custom solution
- UK GDPR transfer route: UK adequacy for Poland, Romania and Bulgaria; an appropriate safeguard for Ukraine
N-iX has a UK team extension page and says it has helped UK companies augment their development teams since 2002. In its staff augmentation model, you manage N-iX engineers directly while N-iX handles HR management; it also offers a managed team and end-to-end custom development. N-iX lists 2,400 tech professionals across Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and other European locations, including more than 1,000 developers in Ukraine and more than 500 in Poland, plus a London office.
Best for: larger UK engineering organisations that want a wide choice of locations and models from one supplier.
Worth asking: which country your engineers would sit in, and whether the contract fixes that location for the whole engagement.
Roweb (Romania)
- Engineers work from: Romania
- Hours ahead of London: +2, all year
- Models: Dedicated client team; custom software development
- UK GDPR transfer route: UK adequacy regulations (EEA country)
Roweb is a Romanian software company, in business since 2004, that offers a dedicated client team: either a complete team of experienced developers or a dedicated pool of developers matched to your technical needs. It lists more than 130 experts across offices in three cities, says over half of its developers are senior, and also builds custom software end to end.
Best for: UK companies comfortable with a two-hour offset that want a dedicated Romanian team from a provider that also delivers custom software projects.
Worth asking: whether your engineers would join your own sprints or work as a Roweb-managed team, and which office they would work from.
Software Mind (Europe and the Americas)
- Engineers work from: Europe and the Americas
- Hours ahead of London: depends on the location
- Models: Dedicated development teams: autonomous, managed by your product owner, or mixed
- UK GDPR transfer route: depends on the country
Software Mind offers dedicated development teams in three forms: autonomous teams that deliver agreed outcomes, external teams managed by your product owner, and mixed teams where its developers join your in-house team, supported by a Software Mind delivery manager. It says it has cross-functional teams throughout Europe and the Americas, and its published client testimonials include UK companies.
Best for: UK companies that want a team, with the option of Software Mind's own delivery management on top.
Worth asking: which country the team would work from, and which of the three team types your contract describes.
Does IR35 apply when your engineers are engaged by a company in Portugal?
Usually not. HMRC's test turns on where the engineer is tax-resident and where the work is done, and the country where the provider is registered doesn't decide it.
The off-payroll working rules, usually called IR35, make sure a worker who supplies services through their own intermediary pays broadly the same Income Tax and National Insurance as an employee would. HMRC's Employment Status Manual covers international cases directly. A worker who isn't UK-resident and works outside the UK is unlikely to fall within the charge to UK tax or NICs, and where there's no such charge, the off-payroll rules won't apply.
The same HMRC page says the residence of the worker's intermediary doesn't need to be considered. Registering an intermediary overseas has no bearing on the outcome. What carries weight in a nearshore engagement is that the engineer lives in Portugal or Poland and does the work there.
On-site visits are the edge case. HMRC says a worker carrying out duties in the UK for an end client will normally fall within scope, with some exceptions for non-UK residents visiting briefly. If an engineer will spend days in your London office, check the position for those days before the trip.
Company size changes who decides. Where the client is a small business outside the public sector, the worker's intermediary decides whether the rules apply. Medium and large private-sector clients, and public-sector bodies, make the determination themselves and issue a status determination statement.
At KWAN, consultants on UK engagements typically live and work in Portugal. They're engaged by KWAN, which handles contracts and compliance, and the client never becomes the engineer's employer. If you plan on-site time in the UK, tell us at the brief, so the position for those days can be checked before anyone books a flight.
This section summarises HMRC's published guidance. It isn't tax advice; for a specific engagement, speak to your adviser.
How does UK GDPR work when a nearshore engineer can access your data?
UK GDPR treats access from abroad as a restricted transfer, and for EEA countries such as Portugal and Poland the UK's adequacy regulations already cover it.
The ICO gives an example close to staff augmentation: a UK business whose servers are accessed by an IT support company abroad is making a restricted transfer. A restricted transfer must be covered by UK adequacy regulations, an appropriate safeguard or an exception.
From the UK to the EEA. Every EEA country has full UK adequacy, including Portugal, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. Under adequacy you don't need a transfer risk assessment or extra safeguards, although the ICO still expects reasonable and proportionate checks that the recipient will meet its local data protection obligations.
From the UK to countries outside the list. Engineers in Ukraine, Brazil or Vietnam are outside the UK's adequacy regulations. Those transfers need an appropriate safeguard, such as the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum, and the ICO's guidance on transfer risk assessments explains when one is needed.
From the EU to the UK. Data also moves the other way, for example when a provider sends you candidate profiles, or when your product holds data on EU customers. The European Commission renewed its UK adequacy decision on 19 December 2025, and the decision now runs until 27 December 2031 unless extended.
KWAN holds both ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701, with all teams and data based within the EU. For a UK client, a KWAN engineer's access to your systems is a transfer to Portugal, covered by the UK's adequacy regulations.
How much working time does a UK team share with Lisbon, Warsaw or Bucharest?
Mainland Portugal and Madeira keep the same clock as London all year. The UK changes its clocks at 1am in March and 2am in October, both 01:00 UTC, and mainland Portugal changes at 01:00 UTC in the same months. Poland is one hour ahead of London and Romania two.
A one-hour gap still leaves most of the day shared. It shows at the edges: a 9:00 London stand-up starts at 10:00 in Warsaw, and a 17:30 incident call lands at 19:30 in Bucharest.
Research published in Organization Science in 2024, using data from 12,038 employees of a large multinational, found that more time-zone distance led to sizable but smaller-than-expected drops in synchronous communication. Employees also moved more of it outside normal working hours. For a team that runs on quick calls and pairing sessions, that's a cost worth weighing alongside the rate.
Teams that work mostly asynchronously, with written specs and clear ownership, can live with two hours. Teams that pair, swarm on incidents or review code in real time will feel each extra hour. For what a shared clock looks like inside a sprint, see what integrated feels like: a nearshore engineer's first 30 days.
How is nearshore staff augmentation priced for UK buyers?
Nearshore staff augmentation is usually quoted as a rate per engineer, and the questions around that rate matter as much as the number. We haven't converted directory figures into pounds for this guide, because they go out of date within weeks. Where a provider publishes its own sterling rates, as Authentic Digital does, its entry says so.
Ask these before you sign:
- Which currency is the contract in? If it's euros, your sterling cost moves with the exchange rate. Ask whether the provider can invoice in pounds, and who carries the currency risk.
- Is the rate daily or monthly? Ask how the engineer's local public holidays and annual leave are handled, because Portugal's and Poland's holidays differ from UK bank holidays.
- What's included? Vetting, replacement if an engineer leaves, and support for the engineer after placement are worth seeing in writing.
- How much notice do you need to scale down? The answer shapes how flexible the arrangement is.
Be realistic about the comparison. Offshore providers often quote lower headline rates than European nearshore teams, and the difference comes back in overlap hours and, outside the UK's adequacy list, in transfer paperwork. Against a UK hire, a nearshore engineer usually means a more competitive total employment cost, with the gap narrowing for scarce senior and specialist profiles. Our eight nearshore vs offshore facts for Portugal tech teams covers that trade-off in more depth.
FAQs
1. Does IR35 apply to nearshore engineers working from Portugal?
HMRC's guidance says a worker who isn't UK-resident and works outside the UK is unlikely to be chargeable to UK tax or National Insurance, and the off-payroll rules don't apply without that charge. Days worked in the UK can change the position, so check on-site visits with your adviser.
2. Can a UK company let engineers in Portugal or Poland access personal data?
Yes. Remote access by a provider abroad is a restricted transfer under UK GDPR, and the UK's adequacy regulations cover every EEA country, including Portugal and Poland. No transfer risk assessment or extra safeguard is needed, though the ICO expects reasonable checks on the recipient.
3. Is Portugal on the same time as the UK?
Mainland Portugal and Madeira are on the same time as the UK all year. Both countries change their clocks at 01:00 UTC in March and October, so the offset stays at zero. The Azores are one hour behind.
4. Which nearshore countries need extra paperwork for UK GDPR transfers?
Countries outside the ICO's list of UK adequacy regulations, such as Ukraine, Brazil and Vietnam. Transfers there need an appropriate safeguard, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum. EEA countries, including Portugal, Poland and Romania, are covered.
5. Is the EU's adequacy decision for the UK still valid?
Yes. The European Commission renewed it on 19 December 2025, and the decision runs until 27 December 2031 unless extended. Personal data can keep moving from the EU to the UK without extra transfer safeguards.
6. How fast can a UK team add a nearshore engineer with KWAN?
KWAN presents vetted profiles in under five days, and its recruitment process closes in around three weeks. The first working day depends on the engineer: someone available now starts almost immediately, and someone currently employed serves their notice period first. These are KWAN's figures, not a market benchmark.
Ready to add an engineer on London time?
If your next engineer needs to make a 9:30 London stand-up next month, send KWAN the role and the date. You'll get vetted profiles in under five days. Ask us to confirm in writing where the engineer will work and how the data transfer is covered, so your own IR35 and UK GDPR checks start from facts. See who's available to start.
